What breaks on a 105-degree afternoon.
These are the air conditioning failures we see most across Dallas, Rockwall, and Hunt County, roughly in the order they show up on the schedule.
Blowing warm air
Usually a failed run capacitor, a burned contactor, or a low charge from a refrigerant leak. The outdoor fan may be spinning while the compressor never starts.
Breaker keeps tripping
A compressor drawing locked-rotor amps, a shorted fan motor, or a genuine electrical fault. Repeatedly resetting the breaker risks damaging the compressor permanently.
Ice on the line set
Restricted airflow or low refrigerant. A frozen coil means the system is not moving heat, and running it that way can send liquid refrigerant back to the compressor.
Water around the air handler
A blocked condensate drain or failed float switch. In an attic install this is the fault most likely to damage ceilings before anyone notices.
One room never cools
Almost always duct-related rather than equipment-related. Crushed flex, a disconnected run, or a return path that cannot supply the air the room needs.
Runs constantly, never satisfies
Undercharged system, dirty coil, failing compressor, or equipment that was undersized on the day it went in. We measure before we conclude.
What fails when the first freeze hits.
Heating equipment here sits unused for months and then runs hard for a few brutal days. These are the faults that fill the phone lines every time a cold front comes through.
Furnace will not light
Cracked hot surface ignitor, a flame sensor coated in oxide, or a pressure switch that will not close. Common, quick to diagnose, and usually a same-visit fix.
Lights then shuts off
Short cycling on a limit switch, most often caused by restricted airflow from a dirty filter or closed vents. Left alone it eventually cracks the heat exchanger.
Burning smell or soot
Worth taking seriously. We test for combustion byproducts and inspect the heat exchanger for cracks before clearing a system to keep running.
Heat pump blowing cool air
A stuck reversing valve, a failed defrost board, or a system running auxiliary heat that never engages. Your electric bill notices before you do.
Electric bill spiked in winter
Usually emergency or auxiliary heat strips running when the heat pump should be carrying the load. A control or sensor fault, not a lifestyle problem.
Thermostat not controlling
Wiring faults, failed transformers, and blown low-voltage fuses. We verify the control circuit before anyone suggests replacing equipment.
Do not sit in it all weekend.
