Heat pumps, mature shade, and 1960s duct runs.

Richardson has a higher share of heat pumps than most of our territory, particularly in the all-electric neighborhoods built during the 1960s and 70s. They are efficient here, but they fail differently than a gas system and they need a technician who works on them regularly.

The faults we see most are stuck reversing valves, failed defrost boards, and auxiliary heat strips energizing when the heat pump should be carrying the load on its own. That last one is quiet. Nothing seems broken, the house stays warm, and the January electric bill doubles.

Richardson also has genuinely mature tree cover, which is pleasant and does change the cooling load on the shaded side of a house. It is one of the inputs we account for during a load calculation instead of assuming every elevation gains heat equally.

In the older Canyon Creek and Prairie Creek homes, duct work is the recurring limitation. Original runs were sized for smaller equipment and lower airflow expectations, so we test before recommending anything larger.
